martha marcy may marlene

i've seen four movies over the past few weeks .. and this was the best one so i won't talk about the others .. although tintin wasn't that bad .. so martha marcy may marlene .. this is one dark movie despite what the name might suggest .. elizabeth olsen plays a troubled young girl who escapes from a cult and goes to live with her sister and her husband .. she is haunted by her past and afraid that they will come for her .. in other words she is a mess .. of course this means that she has trouble adjusting to life in the real world .. so basically the movie goes from scenes with elizabeth at her new home .. and scenes of her back when she was still with the cult .. and the ending .. well let's just say it's "unusual" ..

movies

watched a couple of movies this week .. the first was kung fu panda 2 .. it was good but i liked the first one better .. still it was good fun .. unless you don't like animation movies then you should enjoy it ..

the other was crazy stupid love .. sort of a romantic comedy i guess .. but not a very realistic one .. not realistic at all actually .. great cast though .. steve carell, emma stone, marisa tomei, julianne moore, ryan gosling .. so basically you have a bunch of intertwining love plots .. so unlike most romantic comedies which are about one couple .. there are multiple stories going on here .. it's decent enough .. it's not too cynical but not too mushy either .. good for watching with your significant other ..

movie and a game

watched the movie she devil .. it is an old movie .. 1989 .. remember roseanne .. yes that roseanne .. she's in it .. meryl streep steals her husband .. so she destroys both their lives .. it's a nice movie actually .. watching her go about her evil plan is quite satisfying .. and meryl streep .. oh she was hot back in the day .. damn .. not to mention she is an amazing actress .. i enjoyed the movie .. 9/10 ..

playing rage these days .. picked it up earlier this week but only opened it this weekend .. it's produced by id and published by bethesda .. id brought us doom and bethesda brought us fallout .. and that's how this game plays out .. a mix of doom and fallout .. in other words .. fricking awesome .. also they included a racing element in the game .. again .. fricking awesome .. i'm still nowhere in the game .. only logged in about two hours of playing time .. also i'm playing on hard .. so this is gonna take a while ..

horrible bosses

great cast but not so great movie .. jason bateman jason sudeikis charlie day .. all hilarious guys .. also kevin spacey and colin farrell .. not too shabby .. though jennifer aniston not so much .. kristen wiig would have been funnier .. anyway .. they all hate their bosses and decide to kill them ... and that's the story without any spoilers .. it's kind of like the hangover .. sort of a bromantic comedy .. it doesn't suck but it's also not special ... it's just good ... nothing more nothing less .. 7/10 ..

se7en

well it's almost twenty years old but i finally saw it .. yeah i have a bunch of those in my collection .. that is movies everyone else has seen but me .. inception comes to mind .. anyway i'll get around to them sooner or later ..
back to se7en though .. i can see why it is such a classic .. it really is a great movie .. morgan freeman and brad pitt play two detectives investigating a string of serial killings that have a theme .. that theme being the seven deadly sins .. when they first talk to the killer it is over the phone .. and as i heard him speak i said that is kevin spacey .. and sure enough i was right .. so i deserve a cookie for that .. anyway .. some major twists towards the end of the movie .. 10/10 ..

the joneses

the joneses is a movie with a very interesting concept .. but very poor execution .. the joneses are a fake family .. that is they are not really family .. they are actors playing a family .. they work for an advertising company that pays them to do so .. they move into the suburbs and pretend to be this perfect family so people around them can strive to emulate them .. what is known in marketing terminology as being an opinion leader .. but of course this is all just a facade .. and beneath that perfect surface they have their own drama to deal with just like any normal family .. no matter how hard they try to hide it .. like i said .. great concept .. poor execution .. david duchovny and demi moore play the mother and father .. while amber heard plays the daughter .. and some guy i never heard of plays the son .. could've been better .. 6.5/10 ..

bridesmaids

if you can recognize the girls in the photo above you can guess this movie is a comedy .. you have kristen wiig as the lead .. fellow snl alum maya rudolph .. there's erin from the office .. that one blonde chick from reno 911 .. also rose byrne who i had never heard of before but my she is beautiful .. she plays the perfect girl in the movie so .. then that fat chick in the corner .. who plays a kind of butch character .. anyway it is kind of a chick flick .. but it's produced by judd apatow .. so the humor is somewhat vulgar .. not that vulgar by apatow standards but very vulgar by chick flick standards .. all in all it is a funny movie .. basically wiig and rudolph have been best friends since forever .. and now rudolph is engaged .. but her new friend played by byrne is planning every last detail .. leaving wiig feeling a little jealous .. also wiig is feeling the sting of not having a serious relationship herself .. drama unfolds .. 8/10 ..

in the loop

this is a brilliant comedy ... i laughed out loud so many times ... and that rarely happens when i watch a movie ... especially if i'm sober ... just kidding ... but no it really did make me laugh a lot ... it's kind of a political satire that makes fun of how politicians build a case for - or against - war ... in this case it's the british and the americans and the war is on iraq ... it's probably not a very realistic portrayal of how things went down .. but it's hilarious so who cares .. it's just one of the better comedies i've seen in a long time .. also .. i had never heard of this peter capaldi fellow before but i was mightily impressed ... his cursing abilities are second to none .. 10/10 ...

world's greatest dad

this is a pretty dark movie .. sort of a black comedy .. but more black than comedy .. i can't tell you what it's about without giving part of it away .. but let's just say it stars robin williams playing one of his more serious roles .. like i said i don't want to give anything away but he plays a character who has a big secret that nobody knows .. and should they find out they would realize what a liar he is .. will the truth ultimately come out in the end .. it's up to him to decide .. 9/10 ..

war made easy

a documentary narrated by sean penn that talks about how the US government utilizes the media to promote its wars .. and how often times the media willingly participates in promoting those wars .. although it only confirms what we already believe it is still very informative .. my only criticism is that the word israel never comes up ..

mo at the movies

la confidential .. it's an old one .. but i'd never seen it .. i'd caught glimpses of it on tv before .. anyway having recently played and completed and loved the game la noire i was inspired to see it .. so i did and i was not disappointed .. it is very similar to the game .. which made it all the more enjoyable .. although it also made it all the more predictable .. well maybe predictable is not the right word .. maybe familiar is more accurate .. anyway if you haven't seen it yet please do .. 10/10 ..

the other movie is a little more recent .. bad teacher .. it's like bad santa except instead of billy bob thornton playing a bad mall santa you have cameron diaz playing a bad elementary school teacher .. so if you liked bad santa then you will like this one .. i thought it was a good comedy though it's not for everyone .. i can see some people finding it reprehensible .. and while i am not a big fan of cameron diaz .. i mean she is beautiful but i feel she has kind of a joker smile .. but what a body .. also her acting was good .. she played the role perfectly .. 7.5/10 ..

then there's another comedy that i saw .. your highness .. i guess you could say it is the stoner version of lord of the rings .. it had its moments but overall it was awful .. despite the good cast .. just a crappy movie .. 2/10 ..

over the hedge

nice animation movie .. it's not from pixar though .. still good so whatever .. basically you have these forest animals who discover a suburban neighborhood .. and they discover suburban food .. caffeinated drinks .. potato chips .. popcorn .. cookies .. so anyway they decide it tastes better than the dirt and bark they're so used to .. and so it's like a bank heist movie except they're robbing the suburbs of their food .. and their leader is a raccoon who is having a bit of a moral dilemma .. all around it was quite entertaining .. it was a light wholesome movie .. but it's not only for kids although you will wish you were a kid watching this movie .. i reckon it would've been so entertaining to watch this as a kid .. 10/10 ..

cedar rapids

if you like ed helms you will enjoy this movie because he is the lead role .. he plays a wholesome insurance salesman who due to certain events is chosen to represent his company at the cedar rapids convention .. at this convention one insurance company is chosen to win the two diamonds award .. ed's company had won it the past two years and are counting on him to bring it home for a third consecutive time .. lot of pressure .. and so ed goes to the convention and that's where the movie starts .. his experiences at the convention lead him to grow up .. sort of a fish out of water experience so to speak .. the naive small-town boy loses his innocence and realizes that the world is not so pure .. he drinks for the first time .. meets a hooker .. a raunchy salesman who does not share his wholesomeness .. shares his room with a black man .. and so on .. all in all i have to say it was kind of cheesy.. but the acting and the comedy was solid .. recommended for a weekend night movie .. 7/10 ..

another michael judge movie .. another light mindless comedy .. jason bateman plays a small business owner who is frustrated with the routine of his life .. his main complaint is that by the time he gets home from work his wife has put the sweatpants on .. meaning no sex .. and to further exacerbate the issue he cannot masturbate in peace because the bathroom shares a wall with the tv .. meanwhile .. he also has to deal with the drama at work .. general mills is offering to buy the company for a hefty sum but first he needs to deal with a potential lawsuit by an employee who suffered a terrible work injury which led to him losing a testicle .. also he has to deal with a pesky suburban neighbor who is always trying to invite him to things ... it's a nice light mindless comedy .. nice movie for unwinding after a long week of work .. also mila kunis is in the movie and she is effing hot .. also ben affleck plays his stoner bartender buddy who helps him with his problems .. and snl's kirsten wiig as his wife .. and jk simmons plays his work associate who hilariously refers to everyone as dinkus ... great ensemble for a mediocre story equals good laughs but nothing memorable .. 6/10 ..

idiocracy

i watched this movie called idiocracy .. it's one of those comedies you should watch when you're high .. because it will be funnier .. it's from mike judge the man behind office space .. though it's not nearly as good .. moving on .. the movie stars luke wilson and maya rudolph as two people who wake up in the future 500 years later due to a botched military experiment .. and what they find is a dystopian world where everyone is extremely dumb .. this is what news looks like .. this is what the president of the united states looks like .. this is what the secretary of education looks like .. and this is the number one movie in theaters .. obviously they are not thrilled about it and would like to return back in time .. which would require a time machine .. so they try to find one .. watch the movie to see what happens ..
do i recommend it .. only for those that are looking for a silly comedy that requires zero thinking .. in which case yes i highly recommend it ..
as far as comedies go i give it a 7/10 ..

miller's crossing

i haven't seen a movie in ages ... but seeing as how i am crippled with illness these days i watched one today ... miller's crossing ... it's directed by the coen brothers ... i am a fan of their work ... the big lebowski, fargo, burn after reading ... among others ... anyway ... it was a good movie ... but not my favorite one for them ... basically it's a mafia movie ... so you have a lot of guys walking around wearing trenchcoats and fedoras and leather gloves and carrying tommy guns ... the guy who played keaton in the usual suspects is at the center of the movie ... there is a gang war going on and he is playing both sides ... it can be hard to follow at times but if you can understand what's going on it's quite amusing ... the way he brilliantly manipulates each side ... you never know what he's up to ... also the script is very good ... a lot of witty lines in the movie ... like there was one part where he tells one of the bosses to think about so and so ... and the boss replies by saying you know i don't like to think ... so he says well think about whether you should start ... so i thought that was clever ... anyway ... there is one guy in the movie who plays a very menacing character ... i looked him up and turns out his name is j.e. freeman and he is openly gay ... so he certainly doesn't fit the stereotype ... overall i only recommend it for people who are interested in seeing everything the coen brothers have directed ... such as myself ... otherwise you probably won't like it ... 6/10 ...

life imitates art

i downloaded this collection of doctor seuss films the other day ... they're not really films they're more like short cartoons .. not more than 20 minutes each .. don't know what inspired me to search for it and download it but i've always been a fan of his work ... ANYWAY ... so i watched one ... it's called the sneetches ... now the sneetches are these weird looking yellow creatures ... as most seuss characters are ... and they are two kinds ... star bellied sneetches and bare bellied sneetches ... and the sneetches with stars on their bellies look down on the ones without ... and they enjoy more privileges as well ... then one day a guy comes into town with a contraption that can put stars on your belly ... so all the bare bellied sneetches pay him to use it ... but then the real star bellied sneetches get upset ... so the same guy tells them he has a machine that can remove the star ... so they all pay him to use it ... and then the ones without stars go back to looking down on their counterparts ... so the ones who got stars pay the guy again to have them removed ... and thus begins an endless cycle of getting a star and having it removed ... the guy becomes very rich in the process ... then finally the sneetches run out of money ... also they no longer know who is who or what was what ... who had a star and who didn't ... the guy seeing that there was no more money to be made packs up and leaves ... but it all ends happily ... the sneetches realize how silly they had been acting and live as one people from that point on ...

it kind of reminds me of the situation between jordanians and palestinians ... think about it ... one side has a star on their flag ... and the other side doesn't ... and that makes all the difference ...

black swan

did not go to makka as planned ... heavy rains you see ... so i ended up staying home ... i slept after work ... that's right i work on thursdays ... though it is a half day so ... anyway ... so i watched black swan ... normally a movie about ballet would not interest me ... i don't care if it did receive a lot of critical buzz ... i mean so did brokeback mountain but i'm never watching that ... however ... this movie is directed by darren aronofsky ... he has directed requiem for a dream ... and the wrestler ... two amazing movies ... and now you can add another one to the list ... this movie is very dark and very sexy and also kind of trippy ... a lovely combination ... also ... mila kunis is so hot ... i just have to mention that ... solid 10/10 ... this movie is getting an oscar for sure ...

fly like an eagle

remeber space jam ... that looney tunes movie with michael jordan in it ... well it seems the movie website is still up ... it's like the internet equivalent of cave drawings ...
