remember how i picked all the right winners in the first round ... then again in the second round ... well the streak is over ... i had the nuggets and the cavs in the finals ... but last night the lakers beat the nuggets to win the western conference title and move on to the nba finals ... the cavs are still alive but it doesn't matter ...

A suburban mother who claimed she and her daughter had been abducted and stuffed in a car trunk is in custody in Florida after the pair were found at Disney World, where they had flown hours after the mother reporting their abduction, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Bonnie Sweeten, 38, of Feasterville, will be charged with false reports and identity theft, both misdemeanors, Bucks County District Attorney Michelle Henry said.
and my personal favorite part of the story ...
In the frantic 911 calls, Sweeten, said two men had bumped her 2005 GMC Denali, carjacked her and stuffed her in the trunk of a dark Cadillac. She implied that her daughter was with her in the trunk, according to Philadelphia police Lt. Frank Vanore, who listened to tapes of the calls.
Sweeten, who is white, described her assailants as black but otherwise gave few details about their appearance, Vanore said. "It was pretty generic," he said.

La Cucaracha

my apartment is on the first floor of the building ... consequently i have to deal with the occasional roach from time to time ... don't get me wrong it's not like my apartment is infested ... but every now and then i'll find one ... and more often than not he's already dead ... now why is it that whenever you find a dead roach he is always on his back ... always ... why is that ... every single dead roach i've ever seen is always lying on his back ... is there a scientific reason ... or just a coincidence ... well i couldn't rest until i knew the answer so i turned to google ... and here it is ...
actually it turns out there are a number of possible reasons why this might happen ...
1) Cockroaches are not used to living on a polished marble or vinyl floor. They are more used to a ruguous living plane including leaves and sticks and other vegetable debris. Thus when a cockroach finds itself on its back (by some mistake in its orienteering) it may have trouble righting itself if there is not debris around to grab hold of with its legs.
2) Often we come across dead cockroaches in buildings that have died of insecticide. Most of these insecticides are organophosphate nerve poisons. The nerve poison often inhibits cholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine (ACh), a neurotransmitter. With extra ACh in the nervous system, the cockroach has muscular spasms which often result in the cockroach flipping on its back. Without muscular coordination the cockroach cannot right itself and eventually dies in its upside down-position.
3) Probably because after they die the muscles in their legs contract due to rigor mortis, pulling their legs towards the body and flipping them onto their backs.
there were also a couple of funny answers ... thought i'd share some of those too ...
1) So they can say goodbye to that great fireball in the sky.
2) You have never seen one die? When he is dead, all the other cockroaches go to the cockroach circus tent and buy a bunch of helium filled baloons! They sing and dance and have a ceremony to help the dead roach enter the next phase of its journey! They then tie the baloons to the cockroaches legs hoping the balloons will carry him off to the great beyond! The ones that you see lying on their backs come from poor cockroach families that couldnt afford enough balloons and managed only to flip the dead cockroach over! They are then embarrased so they untie the baloons and hide them!

French President Nicolas Sarkozy flew in to Abu Dhabi on Monday to open France's first permanent military base in the Gulf.
The base will host up to 500 troops stationed in three sites on the banks of the Strait of Hormuz, just across from Iran: a navy and logistical base, an air base with three fighter planes and a training camp.

Predictions: Conference Finals
EAST
cavs vs. magic
the cavs have two things going for them ... the first being lebron james is on their team ... and the second is that they are well-rested ... they swept the first round and the second round ... orlando on the other hand played six games in the first round ... and just completed a seven game series against the defending champs ... so they have to be a little exhausted ... also two of their stars were not that healthy to begin with coming into the playoffs so all these minutes can't be good for them ... but unlike the former two teams that have been destroyed thus far by cleveland ... orlando will not be swept in this one ... the season series between the two is 2-1 in orlando's favor ... in fact the last season game they played was on april 3rd and saw orlando win by almost 30 points ... and also unlike the former two teams orlando has a dominant big man ... they call him superman ... also known as dwight howard ... who's going to guard him ... that's a big question ... on the other hand who's going to guard lebron ... the cavs are heavily favored in this one and i am very tempted to pick them ... but the magic can pull it off if they can find a way to hold on to their leads ... my heart says orlando but my mind says cleveland ... hmmmm ... i just think cleveland is hungrier ... hmmmmm ... i want to say orlando just because all the experts are picking cleveland but who am i kidding ... cleveland has lebron ... of course they will win ...
WEST
nuggets vs. lakers
the nuggets are really on a roll ... they killed dallas just like they killed new orleans ... will they kill the lakers ... let's see ... the lakers have kobe ... gotta respect the kobe ... and gasol ... but somehow i feel that the nuggets big men will beat up on poor pau ... i mean kenyon martin and nene are way tougher than he is ... so bynum really needs to step it up ... looking at the season series the lakers lead 3-1 ... yet the way la has been playing in the playoffs doesn't reflect the superiority they showed during the season so anything's possible ... carmelo's been playing great ... and the nuggets have the advantage at the point guard position ... billups is going to kill derek fisher ... but the lakers are deeper ... i know kobe wants to win a championship without shaq ... so my instinct says lakers ... they have the experience ... but ... nuggets are on a roll man ... they are on fire ... hardly the case for la ... so i'm gonna say the nuggets ...

Smoke Weed Every Day
Former NBA player Corie Blount was arrested after he allegedly was in possession of 29 pounds of marijuana, according to a report in the Cincinnati Enquirer on Friday.
He was set free on $10,090 bail and is set to appear in court on Wednesday, according to the report.
The newspaper said that Blount was arrested after he accepted an 11-pound delivery of marijuana from the U.S. Postal Service at a Liberty Township, Ohio, property that he owns.
Authorities then found 18 more pounds of the illegal drug at Blount’s home, the report said.
(source)
now it's not that uncommon for professional athletes to get in trouble for "possession" ... but 29 pounds ... damn ... 29 pounds ... 29 ... that's gotta be a guinness record ...
it gets better ... the story goes on to mention that police also confiscated "$29,500 in cash, a Mercedes Benz, a Cadillac Escalade, a Chevrolet Suburban and three guns - one of them an SKS assault rifle" ... furthermore ... the story also goes on to mention that "ironically, [Blount] had just completed a degree in criminal justice" ... that's not the only thing that's ironic about this story ... his last name is pronounced "blunt" ...

false advertising
so mcdonalds has this new sandwich called the "gourmet chicken" ... somehow the words mcdonalds and gourmet don't feel like they should be used in the same sentence together ... moving on ... i tried it today ... it's basically the same as burger king's "chicken royale" ... but i'm not writing this to tell you about their new sandwich ... here's the thing ... the sandwich comes in a box ... on the box is a picture of the sandwich ... and in the picture the sandwich clearly has a tomato slice inside ... but you open the box and look at your sandwich and there's no tomato ... now i realize that the picture always looks better than the real thing when it comes to restaurant menus ... but what the hell ... if there's tomato in the picture ... there should be tomato in the sandwich ... those lying bastards ...

the biggest douche

some people might remember an episode of south park where they make fun of this guy called john edward ... for those who don't know john edward is a person in real life and he claims he can talk to dead people ... i saw him on larry king once ... anyway at the end of the episode edward is proclaimed the biggest douche in the universe ... well today i caught an old episode of snl on tv where seth rogen was hosting ... and they did a little sketch where they're pretending to have this event called the national douchebag championships ... so anyway we come to the point of this post ... suppose there really was an award for biggest douche ... who would you choose ... personally i think i would give the title to queen rania ... she has done much to deserve this award ... for example there's the whole youtube and twitter thing which is so lame in my opinion ... but this takes the cake ...

all i will say is this ... we will win ... maybe not in my lifetime ... but make no mistake about it ... we will win in the end ... palestine will be free ...

A billionaire Arab sheik has paid £250,000 to fly 30 members of the Household Cavalry to Abu Dhabi to perform for him, it has been reported.
Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is one of the richest men in the world, has arranged for a specially adapted Boeing 747 to take the horses to the Middle East.
On arrival, the mounts will be transferred to air-conditioned stables, with a team of staff to pamper them.
Meanwhile, the soldiers will fly business class and stay at one of the country's finest hotels, at the sheikh's expense.
Sheikh Mansoor is the brother of the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the biggest of the United Arab Emirates, whose family fortune is estimated at about £555 billion.
Last year he spent £210 million on Manchester City football club.

ethical question

President Obama said Wednesday that he would fight to prevent the release of photographs documenting abuse of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan by United States military personnel, reversing his position on the issue after commanders warned that the images could set off a deadly backlash against American troops. (story)
we live in a beautiful world ... guantanamos and illegal combatants and waterboardings and renditions and so on ... but is torture - or as the cia calls it "enhanced interrogation techniques" - absolutely wrong ... or is it justified in some cases ... like if the guy knew where the bomb was and he wasn't talking and it was going to go off in an hour and if it did hundreds will perish ... then is it ok to torture him ... i mean is that like a good torture ... as opposed to say an abu ghraib which was a bad torture ... i mean that was just for fun wasn't it ...
and if torture is allowed in some conditions ... then the question becomes are there any rules to torture ... war has rules ... so why not torture ... how much is too much ... is there such a thing as too much ... or do the ends always justify the means ...

so the lebanese elections are in full swing ... the campaigning part that is ... a lot of drama there ... also a lot of this going on ... anyway if you don't know what i am talking about just turn on any lebanese channel and watch their news for a few minutes ... so yeah a lot of parties are announcing their candidates these days ... what is known as illawa2i7 ... or as they pronounce it ... illawayi7 ... anyway ... their speeches remind me of duried lahham's movie il 7dood ... specifically the part when they have the festival towards the end ... when all these leaders are giving fiery speeches ... kalimat mandoob janoobistan ... such a classic movie ... anyway a few minutes later in the movie we discover that those words were nothing more than empty rhetoric ... let's hope that the lebanese people discover that soon too ...

Miss Saudi Arabia
But at Saudi Arabia's only beauty pageant, the judges don't care about a perfect figure or face. What they're looking for in the quest for "Miss Beautiful Morals" is the contestant who shows the most devotion and respect for her parents.
"The idea of the pageant is to measure the contestants' commitment to Islamic morals... It's an alternative to the calls for decadence in the other beauty contests that only take into account a woman's body and looks," said pageant founder Khadra al-Mubarak.

Slice of Life
the other day i was driving home on a hot afternoon with a bag of groceries sitting in the driver's seat ... some pepsis, croissants, and cup noodles in there ... just snack food for the house i picked up from the supermarket while filling gas ... i was in a hurry to get home ... it had been a long day ... i'd just finished getting my brakes replaced ... it took three hours ... standing in a greasy autoshop ... in the summer heat of riyadh ... and to top it off it was a thursday but i had to do it ... my brakes were fucked ... i needed new ones immediately ... shit just wasn't safe anymore ... needless to say it wasn't the best start to my weekend ...
as i drove home i passed a man wearing a yellow suit ... the color of the riyadh baladiya ... even their cars are yellow ... anyway he was a garbageman ...he was wearing a piece of cloth across his face ... so that you could only see his eyes ... maybe he was wearing a cap i can't remember ... as i passed him i felt bad for him having to work in this heat all day ... and i was complaining because i had to stand around while someone else replaced my brakes ... so i stopped ... put the car in reverse and drove back towards him ... i pulled up next to him and called him over ... i rolled my window down and handed him one of my cold pepsis ... then i smiled and waved goodbye ... and went home ...
it made me feel better about the bad day i was having ...

Playoff Predictions: 2nd Round
EASTERN CONFERENCE
magic - celtics
the celtics are still without the services of garnett ... and we saw how much that means in their series against chicago ... they barely made it out of there alive ... but give them credit for doing so ... nonetheless they have to be exhausted from that series ... and with no bench to pick up the slack ... i have to pick orlando in this one ... of course orlando did not do that well in the first round either ... they showed an uncanny ability to build big leads and then allow the other team to come back in the fourth quarter so ... but still i'm picking orlando ... the defending champs will fall in this one ...
cavs - hawks
the cavs swept detroit like they were memphis or something ... i expect the hawks to meet the same fate ... lebron just won the mvp and he will show everyone that he deserves it in this series ...
WESTERN CONFERENCE
nuggets - mavs
the nuggets are on a real roll ...i think they will run all over the mavs ... i don't expect another 58 point win like they did against the hornets but still ... nuggets will easily win it ...
rockets - lakers
the lakers are everyone's favorite to win the west ... some people even picked them to be the champions ... but i believe houston is capable of pulling off the upset ... however ... i have to respect kobe ... i can't pick the rockets when the other team has kobe ... the guy is just that good ... so i'm picking the lakers in this one ...
