Doubt

i watched the movie doubt last night ... doubt stars meryl streep and phillip seymour hoffman so you know the acting is going to be superb ... amy adams also plays a role in the movie ... so as the name might suggest ... the theme of the movie is doubt or suspicion if you will ... when is it justified ... is it ever justified ... or is it just another form of gossip ...

the thing about this movie is ... there's no comedy ... no action ... no special effects ... nothing ... it relies solely on the story itself to impress you ... which kind of makes sense since it's based on a play ...

the movie is set in a catholic school in the sixties ... streep plays the strict conservative principal who rules the school with an iron fist ... and hoffman plays the more friendly progressive father at the school ... and amy adams is a young innocent teacher who works at the school that is torn between the two ... the plot thickens when adams suspects hoffman of having an inappropriate relationship with one of the altar boys ... she bases her suspicions on purely circumstantial evidence ... she tells streep about it and streep is convinced that something is going on ... and so the two have a meeting to confront him ... but he denies it ... adams believes him ... streep, however, doesn't and vows to take him down ... going so far as to even tell the boy's mother about her suspicions at one point in the movie ... and that's all i will say ... watch the movie to find out how it plays out ... who will win the battle of wills ... but i will say this ... mild spoiler alert ... even when the movie is finished ... we still don't know for sure whether hoffman did or didn't have a relationship with the boy ... he might have ... but then again he might not have ... nothing is proven ... hence the whole doubt thing ... which makes it interesting because we're not sure who is the good guy and who is the bad guy in this movie ... i mean ... you would think that the friendly progressive guy is the good one ... and the uptight ice queen is the bad one ... but it's not so easy ...

overall ... great acting ... an interesting story ... and they don't drag the story out either ... so it's not too long so that's always good ... but like i said this movie relies solely on the conversations to keep you interested ... so just keep that in mind ... it's one of those movies that will make you go hmmm ... as opposed to movies that make you go wow ... 7/10 ...
