About a week ago, Egyptian Presiden Hosni Mubarak announced a 30% salary increase for all government employees.
Yesterday, the Egyptian government voted in favor of raising taxes, reducing subsidies on fuel, increasing the prices of cigarettes and removing tax breaks from heavy industry to pay for the raises.
“The citizen should be happy with his income raise and not get disappointed by the minor price hike,” Prime minister Ahmed Nazif told reporters shortly after the endorsement of the new increases in parliament.
