Off the Books

i recently got a couple of books ... just finished reading the first one ...
it's called green angel ... written by alice hoffman ... i had never heard of the author before but it turns out one of her books was once selected by oprah for her book club ...
anyway ... it's a short novel ... only 116 pages ... you could finish it in a day ... i finished it in two ...
i say it's a short novel ... but it's actually more like a poem ... i mean the way it's written is very poetic ... i'm not saying that like it's a bad thing ... i'm just pointing out a fact ...
so basically there is this girl called green ... she has a family ... a beautiful mother, a strong father who's always whistling, and a sister called aurora ... aurora is very happy and always singing and dancing ... very bubbly ... whereas green is the opposite ... very shy and quiet and patient and what not ...
anyway one day her family goes into the city without her ... and wouldn't you know it ... a great fire breaks out and a lot of people die ... including her family ... she sees the fire but hopes that her family managed to escape somehow ... but after a couple of days of waiting for them to come back ... she begins to realize that they did not make it ... and that's where the story begins ...
green goes basically psycho after that ... she goes into like a goth state of mind ... bordering on suicidal ... she starts wearing clothes made out of nails and thorns ... she draws ravens and bats on her body ... she starts calling herself ash ... and after that it's pretty much a dark tale of her trying to survive after being left all alone in this world ... we watch the hero as she discovers herself and learns to take control of her own destiny ... don't worry the story has a happy ending ... but you'll just have to read the book to find out what happens ...
so do i recommend it ... i mean it's good ... but like i said ... it's more of a poem than a story ... so if you're not into prose you probably won't like it ... plus it seems to be aimed at teens ... what with the whole angst theme ... and i'm kind of past that now ... i probably would've loved this book a lot more in highschool when i still had that "tortured soul" mentality ... but i definitely plan on reading more for this author ... preferably something more adult next time ...

I like the story before even reading it.

I like how the storyline seems so real; and yes, it probably does have a very teen feel to it-the girl's a teenager, what else do you expect?

Personally, I'd love to read a novel where the protagonist's a tad older, undergoes the exact same situation yet handles it differently.
