remember a couple of weeks ago when israel said it would remove 50 roadblocks as part of an effort to make life for the palestinians in the west bank easier ...
well ...
A senior U S official said “it is hard to assess” the impact of scrapping the roadblocks, let alone confirm all were taken down, because Israel had yet to give Washington or the Palestinians a map showing where they were located.
but wait ... it gets better ...
The Israeli army claimed it removed 61 traffic obstacles, but that figure is disputed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which said that only 44 were actually removed.
In five of the cases listed by the army, the roadblocks were put back after they were removed, according to OCHA, which monitors checkpoints and road closures imposed by the Israelis in the West Bank.
The agency also listed 11 cases in which it said there was no evidence whatsoever that an obstacle was there in the first place.
It said that 17 roadblocks that had been removed consisted of "movements of earth with no significance," meaning the obstacle had either been located in a closed military area, that an alternative route was available within 50 meters, or that the obstacle had been removed earlier.
There were also nine "removals of closures with minimal effect," which in some cases cleared access to a small piece of land used by only one family.
and of course ...
The Israeli army had no reaction to the report.
