just a thought

in saudi there is a thing called the hay2a .. their job is to "promote virtue and prevent vice" .. so part of their job is to cruise around in their shiny new suburbans to make sure everyone closes during prayer time .. i always thought this was interesting .. wouldn't be better if they went and prayed instead?

Been there, done that!! We-were in the souk (Khobar) one day and prayer time came. So the shutters went down and here came the mutawa. With sticks. They actually took the sticks and while SCOLDING my husband herded him like a cow to the mosque. I stood there not knowing WHAT to do. Should I follow, should I stay here? What?
So he told me, stay here and I'll be back. So there I was on the sidewalk ALL BY MYSELF because everyone had disappeared like going POOF. I remember it seemed like FOREVER that I stood there alone. The religious vice squad are NOT the friendliest sort of people you want to cross paths with. It certainly taught me the lesson NOT to be in the souk if prayer time was going to come. Now the shiny new Suburbans, THAT is a new development. Imagine, theme restaurants, Starbucks AND shiny new Suburbans for the mutawa. THAT is hysterical. (maybe letting the air out of their tires would be a harmless prank)But ya know, that's just one of those "things" that KSA offers that is just, well, different.
