Israeli troops forcibly dispersed a demonstration by Israeli leftists outside the West Bank city of Hebron Wednesday sparking a storm of protest.
The soldiers piled into the demonstrators with their feet and rifle butts, wounding one of them in the chest, witnesses told AFP.
Footage of the army's action made the top story on the evening news bulletins of Israel's two main privately run television stations Channel Two and Channel 10.
Defence Minister Amir Peretz issued a statement acknowledging what he described as a "serious incident which constitutes a deviation from the norms of behaviour in force in the Israel Defence Force".
"The army must act in a legal and appropriate manner," the minister said.
