King Abdullah II of Jordan was quoted as saying during a meeting with a visiting Israeli parliament delegation that the Palestinian right of return could be dropped in return for financial compensations and that Jordan and Israel are in the same boat and face the same enemies.
i'm not surprised .. are you?

for the sake of objectivity it should be pointed out that jordan is denying these allegations.
i'm not surprised .. are you :P
nope...and nope...
Since when has the Palestinian right of return ever been an issue for King Abdullah or even Jordan? I think he could care less where Palestinians go, as long as they leave Jordan.
Where's the quote from?
if i'm not mistaken it was haaretz who first reported the quote .. but it is being circulated in some of the arab media now.
No..i'm not surprised. Well i'm not surprised he's thinking that way, afterall, he's a very pragmatic person. I'm a little surprised that he actually said it..it's a bit too forward even for him.
But seriously, this right of return, is like a dream..or a mirage since dreams sometimes come true. It's insisted upon for agendas that has nothing to do with the palestinians' best interest!! Personally, I think that the only possible solution for the palestinian refugees is to become citizens of the countries they're in, financial compensations would be an added bonus.
pragmatic?
is that what they're calling it now?
and pru .. what you're saying is basically the same as saying might as well face it we're never going back and what was once our land belongs to the israelis now .. what you are calling for is what is known as "il taw6een" which even if the palestinians accepted it i don't think any arab country would.
your thoughts?
Under international law, refugees are given their rights to return de facto...there's no negotiation about it (yes, there are "compliance issues" but those are a technicality). And you can have however many generations of refugees until you return. So it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when"...
Plus, I don't think I could sell my identity for money...Returning to Palestine is never a monetary issue, it's a matter of identity, resistance, and politics.
Ok guys, i know where you're coming from. But it's easy for you"and me" to say all this rhetoric about the right of return blablabla and pretend to be heros. Meanwhile the refugees we're talking about are living in dire conditions where they have no rights, no proper educational systems, no jobs and no real opportunities to experience life. Excuse me but I feel that these people who've been hanging on the "technicality" for almost 60 yrs now deserve to have lives! My identity as a palestinian has not been changed even with two different passports, so why should theirs??
It's not only one's identity that gives one dignity..a dignified life is much more important.
Jundi; The lebanese won't accept taw6een..not because they sympathize with the palestinian cause but because they're frightened!! demographic issues and all that.
see pru .. i knew you would say that .. honestly :)
and yeah you're right the refugees are living in shit conditions .. but the fact remains that if they accept the taw6een they are essentially giving up their right to return .. because they are no longer refugees .. having said that .. i reiterate what i said earlier which is that even if the palestinians accept such a solution the arab countries never will lebanon included .. what you said about the passport not changing who you are .. maybe not inside the way you think .. but it changes a lot politically speaking .. anyway this is all my opinion of course :)
