Police and military officials say at least 23 people have been crushed to death while waiting for a cash handout in an eastern Indonesian town.Television footage showed women screaming as they were pushed into a fence by the crowd.
Local police chief Harry Sitompul said a wealthy family was giving $4.25 to each person lined up in the town of Pasuruan, some 800 kilometres east of the capital, when panic broke out.
